Earning your MEng degree may be the right next step to help you stand out as a qualified and competitive engineer. As you plan your continuing education path, consider program flexibility, degree value, and your interests. Read the following FAQ to learn more.

What is an MEng Degree? Is it different than an MS?

A Master of Engineering (MEng) degree typically has a stronger industry focus than a Master of Science (MS) degree. For those interested in academia, an MS can support that goal. An MEng provides technical skill-building for career advancement.

Should I start my master’s immediately after undergrad? Should I gain a few years of industry experience first?

When you choose to start the program depends on your circumstances and what makes sense for your goals. Some students start an MEng program after finishing their bachelor’s degree. Many others enter the workforce and gain a few years of experience before applying.

Can I earn my MEng without pausing my career?

With Michigan Engineering, you have the option to earn your degree completely online, either part-time or full-time. Many students are working professionals who complete their coursework at night and on weekends. Students who choose to learn part-time have up to 5 years to complete their degree.

What should I expect from the online learning experience?

Michigan Engineering designs online MEng degrees to work for you. Each week, you are able to watch the most recent class sessions at your convenience—you don’t have to be in front of your screen at a set time. Faculty members and graduate student assistants support online students by holding office hours and being responsive via email.

How might an MEng impact my career?

Professionals who earn an MEng from Michigan work at top companies, including Ford, General Motors, Tesla, Magna, and Lucid. They work in industries such as aerospace and defense, automotive and parts, utilities, civil and construction, oil and gas, and more. According to data from the Engineering Career Resource Center, the average starting salary for a graduate of a U-M MEng program that’s offered online was $94,509 during the 2024-2025 academic year.

Which programs are available online?
